Mission Statement

Longburn Adventist College as a Christian community challenges students to achieve and serve. Students are encouraged to uphold the motto of "Commitment and Excellence".

Location and Facilities

Longburn Adventist College is set in idyllic country surroundings just 5 kilometres from the city of COMPUT~1.JPGPalmerston North (often referred to as "The Knowledge City" because of the area's many excellent educational facilities, eg. Massey University). Palmerston North boasts many excellent sporting and cultural facilities as well as being just two hours drive from New Zealand's capital city Wellington, and two and a half hours drive from world-class ski fields.

Academic Programme

LAC offers a wide range of subjects, a typical selection including: English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Information Technology (computing), Science, Art, Technology, Physical Education, Bible, Music, Photography, Biology.

There are two methods of gaining University Entrance in New Zealand. These are: Year 13 External Examination or Unit Standard Credits (internally SCAN13.JPGassessed) or the newly-introduced NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement). Most years 100% of our students gain University Entrance. Reports on student progress are sent out twice a year.

Sports and Extra Curricular

LAC incorporates into the curriculum different sports and extra curricular activities such as basketball, netball, volleyball, hockey, soccer, etc. Music opportunities abound at LAC. In 1999 our choir reached the finals of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir Festival. The choir does a number of local performances. Individual instrumental and vocal tuition is also available (fees apply) from qualified instructors who visit the school on a regular basisSCAN_C1.JPG.

Service

Students may have the opportunity to travel away on service trips. In the past successful trips have been held to such places as Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, etc. Service activities include Building, Maintenance, running Bible Schools and various outreach opportunities. In 2006 students went to Rarotonga. Fundraising for such trips is sometimes involved.

Student Welfare/Support

The Chaplaincy support team is totally committed to God and to young people. The support team LIBRARY.JPGconsists of the Chaplain, the Youth Worker, the Campus Ministries Director and the Counsellor. Residential caregivers are also available for help/ support. At LAC there will always be a listening ear and plenty of support for students.

The halls of residence are comfortably appointed. Each residence hall has its own chapel, lounge, and a small kitchenette for personal use. Each room is equipped with two beds, separate wardrobes and drawers, and study space for two. There are 240-volt power points for low wattage items such as electric curlers, but not for electric heaters. Each room is heated and carpeted.

ESOL (English for speakers of other languages)

LAC has recently completed a new International Students' Centre which runs a uniquely devised 5-level English programme. ESOL students can work toward international qualifications (the Pitman Examination) or those who plan to study at a tertiary institution may wish to obtain IELTS or TOEFL qualifications.
